If you don’t have the money to go to a gourmet coffee shop every day (or you don’t wake up early enough like me), you may be searching for a way to spice up your cup at home. There are several spices you can add to your coffee grounds that will make your cup just as good (if not better) as an overpriced one from any coffee house.
Read on to find 5 of our top coffee recipes to turn that plain old cup of joe into a morning adventure!
5 Ways to Spice up Your Morning Cup of Coffee
The first thing I think when I get up in the morning – “Where is the coffee?!”
If you’re like me, drinking a cup in the morning is less of a choice and more of a necessity.
After drinking cup after cup of the same coffee, I get a bit tired of the same old thing. Well, it turns out, you can add some spices to your grounds, brew as usual, and end with an exciting new flavor.
If you blend spices into your morning cup, what do you use? Let us know in the comment section at the bottom of this article!
#1. Spiced Chai
I LOVE creating Chai coffee. 1) Because it tastes sooooo good. 2) It has ginger in it, which has a few health benefits to note.
Ginger is commonly used to treat nausea, reduce muscle pain, lower cholesterol, and help with digestion.
When combined with coffee, they create a free radical-fighting duo, meaning they help fight the appearance of aging (wrinkles, grey hair, etc.).
Add to Your Grounds:
- 1 Tbsp Ground Ginger
- 2-1/2 Tbsp Ground Cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp Ground Cardamon
- 1-1/2 Tbsp Ground Cloves
- 1 Tbsp Ground Coriander
- 1 tsp Ground Black Pepper
#2. Cinnamon-Spiced Morning
Adding cinnamon to your coffee grounds is perfect for first thing in the morning.
Why? Cinnamon improves brain function and motor processes. Drinking a cup of java with cinnamon is basically like jumpstarting your mind, preparing you for the day.
Add to Your Grounds:
With 3/4 cup grounds (regular or decaf)
- 1/4 Cup Firmly-Packed Brown Sugar
- 2 Tbsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract
#3. Bulletproof Coffee
This is for anyone looking for a diet-friendly cup in the morning. Bulletproof Coffee is a ketogenic breakfast, which means it’s low-carb.
The secret ingredient of this cup really surprised me – butter. Turns out, butter in coffee (especially with the added ingredients in this recipe) will help your body turn fat into energy.
Plus, it reduces the risk of heart disease! I’m excited to give this one a try!
Add to One Cup of Brewed Coffee:
- 1 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
- 1-3 Tbsp (to taste) Coconut Oil
- 1/4 Tbsp Vanilla Extract
- 1 Tbsp Cinnamon (optional)
#4. Christmas Blend
I know it’s not quite Christmas yet, but if you love peppermint, you’re going to want to give this recipe a try.
Peppermint has shown health benefits for (IBS) irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, skin problems, headaches, the cold, and the flu. It is also believed to have calming effects, making it the perfect after-dinner cup.
Makes Four Cups of Roasted Coffee
- 8 Cinnamon Sticks
- 1 Tbsp All-Spice
- 1 Tbsp Ground Cloves
- 1 Tbsp Ground Black Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
Add 1-3 drops of peppermint oil to the water (or you can add a small peppermint candy to your cup)
NOTE: Peppermint essential oil can be used, but you should use caution. Essential oils are extremely concentrated so you will need very little. We recommend no more than 3 drops.
#5. Simple Mocha
For our final recipe, I decided to go with something quick and easy. And, who doesn’t love a mocha?
Cocoa has high amounts of antioxidants. That means it works to reduce your risk of diseases like cancer and heart disease.
It tastes great and may lower your blood pressure!
Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp Ground Coffee
- 1/4 Tbsp Cocoa Powder per Cup of Coffee
