When to Plant Your Garden

Now that the weather’s warming up, we know you want to get out in the garden!

Step One:  Know your Hardiness Zone

When is the best time to plant your garden? It really depends on where you live and what you want to plant. In the map below, you can see that the US has been divided up into hardiness zones by the USDA. These are determined by the average minimum winter temperature of that region, then divided into 10 degree F increments.

Pesky Fruit Flies

Fruit Fly Trap It’s summer time! And we all know what that means, fruit flies in the kitchen! Now you can always use a small container and put in apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dish soap, then cover with saran wrap and poke a few holes in there. Once they get trapped they can’t get out.

However Ruralking now has this cute little apple that is much more appeasing to the eye then a bunch of visible dead bugs in a container and its only $6.99! You can easily refill it as needed.

Repel Mosquitoes and enjoy the view!

hummingbird-beebalm-loRepelling mosquitoes can be done not only by coating yourself in bug spray, or carrying a ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Dispenser, but also by planting some useful plants around your house or deck, or place strategically around the yard! There are many plants that help to reply mosquitoes since these pesky little bugs can not stand the smell, and this allow us to sit back and enjoy the view without getting bit. Rural King has several of these plants already started for you to just put in a pot or in the ground, as well as packets of seeds for you to plant as you please!

To start off with most of these plants emit a fragrance that is usually pleasing to us, such as lemon, lavender, and mint. Some of the plants repel naturally, others can be processed (boiled or crushed, etc) into a spray to use. Here is a link that explains how to use each of the plants to help you repel these pesky bugs, make sure to check your planting zones and correlate it with your plants growing zones:

DIY Stump Removal

In the new house my husband and I are moving into next Friday we have at least 1 tree growing too close to the house that we will unfortunately need to cut down. I was searching for a way to remove the stump without using harsh chemicals, and I feel I found a way that will work well for us! With the use of a simple power drill and Epsom salt we can get rid of the stump with very little physical labor at all.

DIY Natural Herbicidal Soap

I am always looking for a cheaper more natural way to keep up my home. I was surprised by this concoction and knew I had to try it! The weeds around my home had no chance against this natural weed killer.

DIY Herb Garden Decor

Wouldn’t it be great if you had your herb garden right in your kitchen without it looking messy? Here is a great idea on some easy DIY small herb garden ideas to fit right inside your kitchen. Some herbs will overtake a garden (like basil) and so having your herbs in a container can not only make it easy access but it makes sure you garden herbs stay where they are supposed to. Make sure you make room for this project in a spot that gets the appropriate amount of sunlight to keep your plants alive.

You will need a full horse shoe and a half horse shoe.  You will need to weld the half horseshoe to the full horseshoe.  You will then need to weld the horse shoes to a post.  What I have used is Electric Fence Post- Steel Round 5/16″ which is sold at Rural King.  You can then paint it whatever color you would like.

You can use this for you aisle decoration.  You can put bow’s, flowers, or just run any colored material like shown below only along your horseshoes.

Just leave space in between the seating and your decoration for your guests to walk.

This decoration is also useful after the wedding.

The pictures above are along a driveway and they have placed lights on them.  You can also cut the post off of the horseshoes and use them in the house for hooks or wall decorations.

Hope you enjoy your horseshoe decorations!

Congratulations on your special day!
